Year 2/1 News

Literacy

We have been working hard learning new graphemes, such as ‘ai’ and double letter words, in Letters and Sounds, playing games, rainbow writing and writing stories.  We enjoyed the story ‘Catch It’ and wrote about the event of a group of meerkats when their peaceful existence is disrupted by a vulture intent on stealing their pride and joy from a meerkat’s point of view.  We used our writing skills to write a method, our predictions, connections,  and describe what happened in Science Club activities focussing on using science words, a capital letter to start a sentence, finger spaces between words and a full stop to show when our sentence had finished.  We have enjoyed listening to our class chapter book ‘Paddington’.

Numeracy

We have been learning about odd and even, partitioning two- and three-digit numbers and 2, 5, and 10 times table in Mathemateg Pen.  We learnt how to use bar models to help us to add and subtract as part of Barvember month.  We have been estimating outdoors and in class with groups of objects, and in Science Club with time in our icy investigation learning how polar bears survive cold weather.  We have been calculating differences between our estimates and the actual number of steps, seconds and objects counted.  Super thinking boys and girls!

DCF

This month we have been learning how to use our username and password to log into Hwb independently. We used the shift key, caps lock to make capital letters and select @.  We learned how to log out safely and why having a really long password and user name keeps our work and data safe.  We created a bar graph on Jit5 on Hwb and inputted data about Paddington’s souvenirs he collected on his journey to London.  We answered questions using vocabulary such as most, least, how many more, and some simple calculations when he lost items overboard and ate some on the long journey!  Ardderchog pawb!

Well-being

We have been talking more about feelings of belonging related to Paddington leaving his family and arriving in a new country. We have really enjoyed our outdoors sessions with some surprisingly sunny days.  We have been learning how breathing can help us to feel calmer in our ‘Peace Out’ meditation sessions.  We enjoyed exploring what our bodies can do in PE sessions. We discussed the theme of this year’s Anti-bullying week –  ‘United against Bullying’ and how we could show this in our actions, speech and behaviour at school.   We give stars to our friends who make us feel valued and happy.
